A couple of months back, my coworker and I got on the topic of Gundams and the buildable characters and shows that make up the franchise. I’ll call him C. C introduced the idea of building Gundams after we started talking about the shows and whipped out his phone and showed off a few that he has built and the seed was planted.
After a while, we would talk about some of the Gundam shows we had seen and the differences between them. As of this post, I have only seen Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans (IBO), Gundam: Witch from Mercury, and Gundam: Hathaway. IBO is by far my favorite.
It’s a brutal take on the Gundam franchise even by Gundam standards from what I have watched and know about the other shows and movies. Adults and children alike are shot, crushed, burned, and churned alike. This Gundam show does not discriminate. Deaths are rated E for everyone and no one is safe. I won’t go too much into the shows in this post just for simplicity’s sake and spoilers. Gundam: IBO made its world come to life for me with its characters and willingness to show the brutality of war on a person’s mindset and body. Plus it has an epic theme song called Raise Your Flag by MAN WITH A MISSION. I get ready and hyped whenever it pops up from the depths of my playlist.
Gundam: Witch from Mercury was the sweetest and the one that got the most laughs outta me. It’s much more easygoing in the first season (until it’s not https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWB0pdFg88E&pp=ygUZY2hvb2Nob28gaGl0cyBnaXJsIGd1bmRhbQ%3D%3D) and was a good change of pace compared to IBO’s constant gruesomeness. There’s not much to say about this show compared to IBO because it was more of a feel-good show that has a little bit more emphasis on the silly side. It’s a fun watch, check it out.
Gundam: Hathaway is a movie on Netflix that is set in the original timeline of Gundam and expands on the character Hathaway and what he is currently up to. Fair warning, this movie is a setup for the next movie. Don’t get me wrong. There is still plenty of action and politics that Gundam is known for, but by the end of it you definitely get the feeling that it is not complete and I believe that is on purpose. The movie does a good job of only including snippets of information from previous movies and focusing on the new story it is telling. Even though I know the general events of what happens in the Gundam original timeline, I felt that I could watch this movie without any Gundam knowledge and enjoy it (because giant robots fighting go brrr).
There is a new Gundam series coming to Netflix called Gundam: Requiem for Vengence. I don’t know much about it, but the trailers seem really cool and is told by a group from Zeon’s perspective on the emergence of a new weapon, the Mobile Suit Gundam. I can’t wait for it to come out this year. They already have pictures of the Gundam models that are releasing with the show and they look sick.
That’s it for the Gundam section. I’ll make another post about the models I have built already. I’ve built 2 out of the 3 that I bought from my local game store, Down 2 Game. They really got me. I was only going to buy one set and was told at checkout that there was a Buy 2 Get 1 Free Sale going on and I did a 180 and picked out two more. I got the HG Barbatos, RG Red Astray, and RG Wing Zero EW kits. If you don’t know, every Gundam figure you buy comes in pieces for you to build. It’s like cooler, cheaper Legos. But you know, cool robots. The head of a Gundam could be ten pieces and when the head is all put together is the size of the tip of my pinkie. I’m not exaggerating, I wish I was.
Well. Tis it for my Gundam Talk tonight. I was intentionally vague on the details of Gundam shows because there are separate timelines and stuff between them. All three that I first listed are separate timelines while Gundam: Hathaway and Gundam: Requiem for Vengence happen in the same timeline. It can get confusing and I don’t want to type up an explanation because I am lazy and it is 12:19 AM right now XD. If you’re interested in the timelines, I’ll leave a link to a YouTube video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVlnPmodPYc&pp=ygUZZ3VuZGFtIHRpbWVsaW5lIGV4cGxhaW5lZA%3D%3D).
Anyways, I’m goin to shower and sleep. G’night!
P.S. You’re cool for reading all this.
